Kampusareena, the striking green-roofed building, is the heart of Tampere University’s Hervanta campus. Around 8,000 students study natural sciences, engineering and information technology here. Kampusareena’s roof is described as the largest biodiversity area among Finland’s green roofs, and the science library inside is open to everyone.
If you’re thinking about studying IT in Finland, here are the standout schools, real tuition fees for the 2027 intake, and the application dates you need to know.
University or University of Applied Sciences?
Finland has two kinds of higher education institutions:
- Universities: research-oriented and strongest at master’s level. A good fit if you want to go deep into computer science, AI, data or research.
- Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS / AMK): practical, industry-linked, with many English-taught bachelor’s programmes. A good fit if you want to start working right after graduation.
Standout universities
1. Aalto University (Espoo)
Aalto is Finland’s leading technology university; its Otaniemi campus next to Helsinki is a lively startup hub. Fees in the field of technology for students starting from 2025 onwards are €12,000/year (bachelor’s) and €17,000/year (master’s). New bachelor’s students who accept and pay within 21 days get 25% off the first year.
2. University of Helsinki
Finland’s largest and oldest university, where Linus Torvalds studied when he created Linux. English-taught master’s programmes cost €13,000, €15,000 or €18,000/year depending on the programme; bachelor’s programmes cost €13,000/year. Excellent master’s applicants can receive 50% or 100% tuition waivers, applied for together with admission.
3. Tampere University – Hervanta campus
Hervanta hosts the faculties of information technology and communication sciences, engineering and natural sciences, with more than 100 companies based on campus. Fees for the 2027 intake are €10,000/year (bachelor’s) and €12,000/year (master’s), among the most affordable in this group. A few top applicants receive a 50% tuition scholarship for the whole programme, and an early-bird offer takes €2,000 off the first year if you accept and pay within 21 days.

4. LUT University (Lappeenranta)
LUT is known for software engineering and green technology. The 2-year Master’s in Software Engineering costs €15,000/year, with a €5,000 early-bird discount on the first year. LUT runs its own application period, open from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027 (it may close early if places fill up).
5. University of Oulu
Oulu is the tech capital of the north, known for telecommunications and 6G research. It offers 50%, 75% or 100% tuition waivers for non-EU master’s students, decided together with admission.
